Russell Cotes Cup 2nd round

BROCKENHURST v CHRISTCHURCH

Christchurch manager Graham Kemp selected this line up:

1 Dan Loader
2 Adam Costello
3 Dan Taylor
4 Mark Coleman
5 Lee Hodder
6 Lloyd Jenvey (capt)
7 Dan Crutchley
8 Dave Midgley
9 Robbie Woolner
10 Marc Burrows
11 Paul Rideout

12 Ross Drew
14 Martin Lawrence
15 Steve Linpow
16 Lewis Till
17 Paul Manning

The game kicked off some twenty minutes late due to the non-appearance of the two scheduled referees assistants. Replacements were called in and the match started at a hectic pace. Brockenhurst were passing the ball through their able midfield and Christchurch were using the pace and movement of their front two on the break. Dan Taylor crossed for Dave Midgley to head over when well placed and Robbie Woolner seemed through on goal but turned into two challenges, which resulted in the loss of the opportunity to get in a strike on goal. Marc Burrows then tried a shot from distance which was on target but competently saved by the Brockenhurst ‘keeper. A Midgley free kick saw Burrows’ movement create space for Dan Crutchley to get in a header, which went just wide. Dan Loader in the Christchurch goal had to be alert on several occasions making some fine catches, good stops and capping his individual performance by saving a penalty. Dave Midgley’s wild challenge on 26 minutes led to his being booked and a penalty awarded but Loader saved low down to his right. Just before half time Christchurch skipper Lloyd Jenvey saw his shot just clear the crossbar. A good half for Christchurch during which, perhaps they should have been in front.

Half time: BROCKENHURST 0 CHRISTCHURCH 0

The second half saw Brockenhurst come out with renewed vigour, following an interval roasting from their manager. Five minutes in and Mark Coleman cleared a cross over his own goal and from the resulting corner the ball broke to a Brockenhurst forward just outside the penalty area. Taking the ball on some 10 yards without being challenged he crashed the ball past Loader and into the net. Christchurch huffed and puffed and created a few half chances but paid for not scoring in the first half when ex Christchurch player Ben Griffiths sealed the game for Brockenhurst when he tapped in following a goalmouth scramble.

Final score: BROCKENHURST 2 CHRISTCHURCH 0
